hey! did you know that my book Study With Me, a student-focused guide to bullet journaling, is currently available for pre-order? check it out with the link in my bio! :D ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ here’s a look at an example spread from the physics section. how many of you are taking physics this school year? 🙋🏻‍♀️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Scans of the inside covers of Strang’s Calculus, which you can legally-download for free here from the MIT website. This is my all-time favorite math or physics textbook.

Scanned it so I could cut and paste it into my new sketchbook, wanna try and make a ~cool artistic~ reference poster out of it, ‘cuz I’ve been real into that idea since I took notes about rings for the algebra midterm on a big piece of watercolor paper.

as a studyblr with high grades I feel the need to put it out there, I’ve never pulled an all-nighter. Yes I’ve stayed up late in an effort to get assessment done but never past 11:30pm. I can count on one hand the times I’ve sacrificed my sleep and long term health for school. As a studyblr with sleep apnea and anxiety, to me it is not worth pulling all-nighters. Instead use your time effectively. Start assignments straight away and aim to have them finished two days before the due date and just going over and editing until it’s due. The key to never having to sacrifice sleep is good planning and following through. Maybe it’s that you should stay at school for an extra hour or two to get work done, or maybe it’s that you need to wake up super early to work before school. Whatever it is, figure it out and carry through. Please don’t glorify bad sleeping habits, it hurts you more than you could know.

This is so true and important!

Math Study Tips!!

Daily class work

  • Understand key concepts - pay attention during lectures/lessons and make sure you can keep up
  • Clarify with classmates, teachers, lecturers - ask questions after the lesson if you don’t understand, or even go for consultations to clarify (it’s better to clarify now instead of before a big exam and you realise you know nothing) (lol)
  • Practice, practice, practice - math is all about practice and getting the hang of it, don’t give up!

Preparing for an exam/test

  • Know what’s being tested - list down all the topics that are being tested and make sure you understand every one of them
  • Practice by topic - do questions specific to each topic/concept so you know which you’re weaker in and you can dedicate more practice to it
  • Do timed practices - try to do it in exam settings (quiet place for the whole duration of the paper) so you can truly test your understanding
  • Know your formulas - know which will be provided for you, which you need to memorise and even which are commonly tested
  • Know your calculator functions - I’ve been using my huge TI-84 calculator for 1.5 years and I still take a while to remember which function I need to use, this slows you down during papers - so use it often, breeze through the manuals if you need to
  • Time management - if you get stuck on a question for a long time, move on!! you’ll end up getting more frustrated and you waste time instead of doing questions you can score in (questions are not organised according to difficulty - some questions at the back can be easier than the ones in front!)

After the exam/test

  • if you can keep the question paper - go home and try to re-attempt the questions you couldn’t do with your notes - practice makes perfect!
  • if you have a second paper - check which topics were not tested and practice them more, there’s a higher chance that they’ll come out in the second paper!

Hope these were helpful, math isn’t as bad as it seems, you just need to know how to tackle it!! (I’m a humanities student whose best subject is math lmao)(If I can do it, so can you!!) Feel free to message/ask me for any help :-)

How to Study when you’re Sick

sunscreenstudies:

Thankfully this rarely ever happens because of my super-duper immune system, but when I do get sick, it hits me hard and fast and has no regard whatsoever for upcoming assignments or exams (like today) So! This is what I like to do step-by-step whenever I have to study while simultaneously feeling like death:

1.  Go for a shower. Seriously. I know you really don’t want to because you’re tired and achy and it’s so much effort, but you’re also kind of disgusting right now so it’ll pay off, I promise! Turn the water on hot. Pick out your favourite shampoo and soap and use copious amounts. Put conditioner in your hair and brush your teeth while you wait. Rinse away everything, make a mad dash for the fluffiest towel you can find, and dry off.

2.  Wear your warmest pyjamas. Yea, you heard me, pyjamas while studying, the sacred rule that everyone has sworn against breaking lest there be terrible consequences!!!!! Here’s the thing. You already feel like a zombie. You literally cannot feel any more exhausted. So put on those fluffy pj’s your grandmother bought you when you were 12, and find some fuzzy socks to match.

3.  Gather your study stuff and make tea. Or hot chocolate, or coffee, if you like, though I’d advise against too much milk since dairy tends to make sore throats even worse. Find all of the stuff you need for your study sesh, lay them out neat and tidy, and then have a hot drink to relax. No, I’m not being sarcastic, you genuinely should relax. Your body is already pretty against functioning at this point, and the thought of studying may just knock it over completely, so set up your stuff and then sit down for a few minutes to adjust. Bonus: Look up studyspo on tumblr to get yourself psyched up while you chill!

4.  Actually study. It doesn’t have to be for long, it doesn’t have to be a difficult subject, it doesn’t even have to involve notes or highlighters or colourful binders, just as long as you study. Even just reading one page from that biology book is a win! The fact that you’ve even gotten to this stage is a win!! Have a hot drink or water on standby, tissues and painkillers on hand, and wrap a nice soft blanket around your shoulders while you work. And remember: Even if you just study for 5 minutes, that’s still 5 minutes more than you had an hour ago.

5.  Congratulate yourself. Tidy up your supplies and put away the books. It doesn’t matter if you did 10 minutes, and hour, or more, the fact that you still survived while doing a remarkable impression of a corpse means you did well!! Have a snack, drink some water, and climb back into bed. You did it!!

That rabbit/hare post is messing me up. I’d thought they were synonyms. Their development and social behavior are all different. They can’t even interbreed. They don’t have the same number of chromosomes. Dogs, wolves, jackals, and coyotes can mate with each other and have fertile offspring but rabbits and hares cant even make infertile ones bc they just die in the womb. Wack.

These

and that’s why morphology-based phylogeny has Issues

@aviculor

The problem is perspective. People always think dogs are the ā€˜standard’ animal, the metric to use for whether or not two organisms ā€œlook likeā€ they’re related. When in fact they’re a massive outlier due to the fact that we fucked up this lineage of wolf beyond recognition with selective breeding. It’s why people always sayĀ ā€œbreedā€ when they mean ā€œspeciesā€, especially when talking about groups like lizards which can’t even be defined cladistically since some of them are closer to snakes than each other. To say nothing of fish.

I once read an article that emphasized there is no such thing as a fish. Sharks and rays, lamprey, lobe-finned fish like lungfish and coelacanth, bichir and sturgeon, and of course the multiple infraclasses of moreĀ ā€œmodernā€ fish groups are all only very distantly related to one another. They’ve maintained semi-similar body structures only because there are limited ways to efficiently move through water as a vertebrate.Ā

And this

Are more distantly related from one another than you and I are from a lungfish

Which is absolutely fuckin wild.

Not only that, but all of us air-breathing land vertebrates, all the lizards and chickens and people and frogs, are closer to one another than those three ā€œfishā€ are to one another as well.

COOL.Ā

just the other day, one of my friends mentioned this book, ā€œDinosaurs: A Concise Natural History,ā€ which apparently has a (tongue in cheek) chapter that argues that Cows are actually Fish.
